I think if there is one thing we can agree that all parents need and that is a bloody holiday! There are only so many shitty nappies and crayon on the walls that you can take before you need a well earned break away. There are so many places I want to visit, so many different cultures I want to experience but for this year we are sticking with a staycation on our home soil. When you have lived somewhere for a while it may seem a bit boring just breathing the same air when you’re meant to be holidaying but the UK has so much to offer which we often forget about because it’s the norm for us. The UK is so much more than a sausage roll from Greggs (although we have to agree they’re the best) and a flat white from Costa. So many people come to visit this little rainy dot in the ocean and for good reason, so why not be tourists in your own country this year? With Spring FINALLY coming into full force which means Summer is just around the corner, it’s about time you started planning your getaways! With home educating, it means impromputu trips out and holidays are a heck of a lot easier and a heck of a lot cheaper so we are trying to make the most of the freedom to make up for lost time!
Reasons you should have a staycation this year…
No baggage limits…
If you are an over packer like me then you’ll appreciate this a heck of a lot. When it comes to packing with kids your going to end up needing to take even more crap than usual.
Baggage limits are hard when your kid insists on taking half of their bedroom but hey, you can totally stuff that giant Hello Kitty in the car. There is no worrying about your luggage getting lost or valuables gettingbroken in transit although I do always go for a a hard shell case because they are an absolute must have if you’re going to be carting MacBooks, iPads, cables and DSLRs like me. The last thing I want is a broken camera because I would hate to imagine how much it would cost to repair.
This case is by IT Luggage from Matalan and it’s cabin sized so perfect for all those important bits, plus, you ain’t gunna lose this beast! How beautiful is the ombre! I love a good ombre.
No jet lag AKA more sleep…
When you’re a parent, jet lag can be enough to tip you over the edge of your regular sleep deprivation and into full on zombie mode and even death. Okay maybe not actual death but I sure as hell feel like I’m dying most mornings from sheer exhaustion. Add jet lag onto that and well, I would prefer a staycation over that because I don’t think I could deal with the clocks screwing my sleep over as well as my children.
It’s a heck of a lot cheaper…
It’s no secret that holidays on your doorstep are a heck of a lot cheaper than going to Disney (although I totally want to go to Disney) and when money is tight, well, it’s better than nothing. Just getting away from the same four walls can do you the world of good and if it includes not having to cook or clean then that’s a bonus too. Give me a cosy cottage in the Lake District over a long haul flight any day!
It’s less stressful…mostly…
No booking flights, no worrying about checking in, delays or cancellations, no worrying about making up bottles in a foreign country or keeping a toddler entertained on a cramped aeroplane…I could go on.
The thought of a long haul flight with 2 kids terrifies me to be quite honest and I think we are going to stick close to home until Lily is older because just thinking about the stress makes my palms sweaty.
More predictable weather…
I say more predictable but I mean your wardrobe is already kitted with the right clothes because let’s face it, the UK is like a small child having a tantrum when it comes to the weather; one second the sun has got it’s hat on, all cheery and whatnot and the next it’s pelting it down with 2ft of snow.
Packing just a bunch of dresses and shorts probably isn’t your best bet. I have some Jessie jeans from Matalan which are perfect for the 99% of British weather (minus the one day of actual Summer) and can be dressed up or down.
When kitting out the kids your best bet is to take things that can be layered but will be cool enough if you happen to strike lucky and go away during the only week of Summer in the UK.
This beautiful little embroidered denim dress from Matalan again, and is a perfect example! Lovely and cool on it’s own but it can be layered over leggings if it’s chillier.
The UK has some pretty beaches too…
Staycation or not, the majority of holidays involving kids result in some sort of water related activities. Whether that be a swimming, the beach or even a paddling pool in the back garden. A favourite beach of mine growing up was Robin Hood’s Bay in Whitby, I loved that beach and all of the rocks and fossils.
Anyway, beaches mean swimwear don’t they, Eloise chose a cute little ombre two piece, the little frills are so freaking adorable I can’t cope. Paired with a nice, floaty kaftan and she’s set for the Summer fun.
For Lily I went for a, quite frankly amazing little unicorn wetsuit. Matalan again, I do tend to try and go for the wetsuits over the swim suits for Lily because of her super sensitive skin. This will help block out some extra UVA rays and protect her skin from burning. It’s also great for those cooler indoor pools for swimming lessons too! Not going to pretend like I don’t want one in my size…Nope.
So, those are my reasons to give a staycation a whirl this year. Sometimes it’s just nice to really open your eyes to the beauty on your own doorstep and appreciate all the things we overlook on our way to work or on the dreaded school run.
I hope you all have fun being tourists in your home town or wherever you’re heading this year!
