If you follow me on Instagram then you might have seen these little cards pop up on my stories and my grid and if you’ve followed my blog for a while then you’ll know I’m big on mental health.
It’s our job as parents to do everything in our power to support our children and quite often, childhood mental health is often overlooked. Kids these days have so much pressure put on them from various sources such as school, SATS for children as young as 5, bullying, among other things. Childhood mental illnesses are on the rise and while we can’t completely eliminate the chance of our children developing certain mental illnesses but we can do our bit in boosting their self-esteem any way we can.
You may remember a post back in 2016 that I wrote about Eloise’s experience with being bullied at her first school, she quickly went from a child who was radiating positivity, who lit up the room to a child who has lost her sparkle. It was like that school blew out her spark. She was bullied for the entire time she was at this particular school until the final straw came and the head suggested she become resilient to death threats (yeh you read that right) and we moved her which helped at first but she never regained that spark. Eloise has been home educated again now for just over a year and she is starting to get that sass back finally!
So how can we help boost our children right up?
I Can Cards
I Can Cards are positive affirmation cards which help offer motivation and reassurance. Designed with mental health in mind and created by people who really understand the subject. They have various themed cards from ones aimed at single parents to one aimed at children, which are the ones we have.
The I Can Children’s Cards are a collection of 25 affirmation cards aimed at children aged 4-11 and are filled with lovely little messages that are easy for even very young children to read and understand. The idea is they pick out a card each day and you can either read it out to them or they read it themselves and it will help give them a little positive boost and reassurance. To top all that all their packaging is 100% plastic free and recyclable.
these cards help instil the tools our children need to achieve self-love which is such an important but rare thing in society these days so anything we can do to help nurture this in our children is worth doing.
As someone who was painfully shy and was diagnosed with mental health issues from the tender age of 2, I really feel like this sort of thing would have helped, especially as I got a bit older because, well, I don’t remember much from when I was 2.
It’s very overwhelming as a child trying to cope with mental illnesses, I mean that doesn’t mean it’s easy as an adult but as a young child, it’s harder to understand why you’re feeling the way you are. At least as an adult, you have the tools to figure out why you’re feeling the way you are even if that’s just by understanding to ins and outs of whatever illness you have and have the capacity to properly understand triggers and things like that. Even without a mental illness, these cards help instil the tools our children need to achieve self-love which is such an important but rare thing in society these days so anything we can do to help nurture this in our children is worth doing.
